Finding places where to hang out in OpenSim isn't as superduper easy as one might wish for occasionally. However, we do have a few recommendations for locations where you can easily socialize and meet others:

In contemplating the digital landscape, Second Life emerges as a visually appealing platform, particularly for those seeking vast social interactions and the exploration of diverse environments. It offers an avenue to encounter numerous strangers with the anticipation of forming new connections. It is worth noting, however, that Second Life is not explicitly designed for dating, dispelling the occasional jest that confuses its purpose with platforms like Tinder.

Yet, for those inclined towards creating their own virtual sanctuary, a space for socializing with friends and fostering learning experiences, OpenSim (actually: OpenSimulator) presents itself as the superior choice. With negligible land prices, even the option to self-host ones own demesne, and an array of expansive features, OpenSim provides a canvas where possibilities extend beyond the confines of other virtual realms.

Encountering one day a situation where we needed assistance, we were met with dismissal and a refusal to validate assumptions against the real world. This perceived lack of accountability included unwarranted permabans issued without warning, explanation, or recourse, even on the first instance of trouble. We find this counterproductive.

It appears that Second Life's default approach to challenges involves swift permabans, perhaps influenced by past decisions that led to complex situations for the parent company. While we understand the legal constraints, such an approach seems to prioritize suspicion-based actions over comprehensive issue resolution, a strategy successfully implemented by the Kitely Grid in OpenSim. This shift has transformed Second Life from the supportive platform of the past into just another social media outlet primarily concerned with shareholder satisfaction or a good standing with more and more radicalized “conservative” groups.

This shift prompted our support for OpenSim. While we regret losing connections with creators exclusive to Second Life, we recognize that OpenSim, despite being less business-oriented, provides alternatives. Kitely Grid, for instance, offers a comprehensive marketplace with a system ensuring artists' rights, albeit only within the Kitely Grid ecosystem. Other alternatives, like Paypal-based market systems, enable the direct purchase of objects in OpenSim, potentially minimizing costs and conversion losses, offsetting the heightened risk of illegal copies.

Acknowledging the existence of disruptive individuals, we prefer to focus on the cooperative ones. At Shork, we share the sentiment that the current state of affairs is disheartening, and we recognize the need for change. Therefore, we have chosen to be proactive in shaping a more positive environment.
